Most wounds are bigger than they look.

A bite leaves a hole the size of a tooth and a pocket of damage under the skin the size of a palm. The gap between what you can see and what is actually there is why so many wounds here get treated twice.

What happens

What the appointment actually involves.

Assessed before anything is applied

How deep, how old, and what is underneath. That is what decides mild from severe, and it is decided at the visit rather than over the phone.

Cleaned properly

Clipped, flushed and debrided. Most wounds we are called to have had something put on them before anyone washed the dirt out.

Pain relief

Given before the cleaning where it is needed, not after. A safe veterinary painkiller, never anything from a human cupboard.

Dressed, or deliberately left open

Some wounds heal worse under a dressing. You are told which yours is and why.

A plan for the days after

What to watch for, when to change anything, and the point at which you call us rather than wait.

Before we come

  • Clean water first if you can. Not spirit, not iodine, not petrol, and nothing from the kitchen.
  • Stop the animal licking it. Licking is how a graze becomes an infection, and a collar buys us a better wound to work with.
  • Tell us when it happened and what caused it. A bite, a burn and a graze heal in completely different ways.

Afterwards

  • Bite wounds are the ones that catch people out. They look small and are frequently the most serious thing we see all week.
  • Anything gaping, bleeding steadily, over a joint, or more than a day old needs a vet the same day rather than a dressing.

Pet health cover does not apply here

No pet health plan in Nigeria settles this, so it is paid for directly. We would rather say that here than have you discover it at the point of claiming.

Asked most

The three questions we get every time.

What makes a wound severe rather than mild?

Depth, contamination, how long it has been open, and what sits under it. A clean graze on a flank is mild. A bite over a joint, a wound with dead tissue, or one open for two days is not, and it costs more because it is genuinely more work.

Can you stitch at home?

Simple, clean, fresh wounds often yes. Anything needing sedation, deep exploration or theatre is arranged rather than attempted on a dining table, and we tell you that on the day rather than start and stop.

Is wound care covered by pet health cover?

Treatment is settled through Skeepy Pet HMO on dog and cat plans where the plan covers it. Give us the HMO ID at booking and we check the balance before the vet sets out.
