The rabies shot, done at home and recorded properly.
Rabies is the one vaccine that is not really about your pet. It is about the child next door, and about you being able to prove the shot was given when somebody asks. Both of those depend on the card being right.

What the appointment actually involves.
A check before the shot
Temperature and a quick examination. A vaccine given to a pet that is already unwell is a wasted vaccine and an unnecessary risk.
A logged cold chain
The vaccine travels in a monitored cool box. A rabies vaccine that has been warm is water, and you would never know from looking at it.
The card updated on the spot
Product, batch number, date and the vet's licence details written in before we leave, because a card without a batch number is not evidence.
The next due date set
Recorded on your file and reminded, so the annual booster is not something you have to remember on your own.
Before we come
- Find the old vaccination card if there is one. If it is lost, say so and we will start a fresh one rather than guess at a history.
- Feed normally. There is no need to fast a pet for a vaccination.
- Tell us about any reaction to a previous shot, even a mild one, before the vet draws it up.
Afterwards
- A quiet evening and a slightly sore spot are normal. Swelling that grows, vomiting or a pet that will not stand is not, and you should call us.
- Protection is not instant. If the shot is for travel or for a bite investigation, the date on the card is what counts, so keep it safe.

ReadThe three questions we get every time.
How often does my dog or cat need it?
The first one from around three months old, then a booster every year. Nigeria treats rabies vaccination as an annual event and every destination we help clients travel to expects an in-date card, so annual is the schedule we work to.
My pet never leaves the house. Does it still need it?
Yes. Indoor cats get out, and a bite from a stray or a bat at a window is exactly the scenario the vaccine exists for. It is also the shot you will be asked to prove if your pet ever bites someone, and without a card the conversation gets very expensive.
Is it covered by pet health cover?
Skeepy Pet HMO covers anti-rabies vaccination on its plans for dogs and cats. Bring your HMO ID when you book and we will check the balance on your plan before the vet arrives.
