The only ID that cannot fall off.

A collar comes off in a fence, and a tag rubs blank in a year. A microchip is a permanent number under the skin that a scanner reads, and it is the difference between a found pet and an unclaimed one.

What happens

What the appointment actually involves.

ISO standard chip

A 15-digit ISO chip, which is what scanners here and abroad are built to read. A non-standard chip is worse than none, because it gives false confidence.

Implanted properly

Between the shoulder blades, in one movement. It feels like a large vaccination and needs no anaesthetic.

Scanned to confirm

Read back with a scanner before we leave, so you know it is in and working.

Registered on the spot

Your details attached to the number while we are with you, not left for you to do later, which is how most chips end up useless.

The number given to you

Written on the card and on your record. Photograph it.

Before we come

  • Have the phone number and address you want registered ready, and a second contact if you have one.
  • If your pet may already be chipped, say so. We scan first, and a second chip in the same animal causes real confusion later.
  • Chipping is usually done at the same visit as a vaccination or a health check, which saves you a separate home visit fee.

Afterwards

  • Tell us if you move house or change your number. A chip registered to a dead phone number is a chip that does nothing.
  • Keep the number somewhere you can reach it while standing in the street looking for your dog, which is when you will need it.

Pet health cover does not apply here

No pet health plan in Nigeria settles this, so it is paid for directly. We would rather say that here than have you discover it at the point of claiming.

Asked most

The three questions we get every time.

Does it hurt?

It is a large needle and most animals react for a second and then forget it. No anaesthetic, no stitches, no recovery. Puppies and kittens tolerate it better than owners expect.

Does a microchip track my pet's location?

No, and this is worth being clear about because it is widely misunderstood. It is not GPS. It has no battery and does nothing until somebody passes a scanner over it. What it does is prove which pet is yours, permanently.

Do I need it to travel with my pet?

For most destinations that matter, yes, and the order of events is strict: many countries require the chip to be implanted before the rabies vaccination, or the vaccination does not count. If travel is anywhere in your plans, chip first and vaccinate second.
