A weight first
Every dose is calculated from a real number on the day, not the number from six months ago.
The right product for the parasite
Roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm and whipworm do not all answer to the same drug. What we use depends on age, species and what you have been seeing.
Given and watched
The vet gives it and stays long enough to know it went down and stayed down, which is the part that fails at home.
Next due date tracked
Recorded and reminded, because the schedule is the whole point and it is the thing everybody loses track of.
Before we come
- Tell us the last time your pet was dewormed and what with, even if it was something from a pet shop and you cannot remember the name.
- If you have seen worms, say what they looked like. Flat and segmented points somewhere different from long and round.
- Do not fast the pet. Most dewormers are better given with food.
Afterwards
- Seeing worms in stool for a day or two afterwards is the treatment working, not failing.
- A heavy burden in a young animal can cause a bad day or two. If a puppy or kitten goes flat after a dose, call us.

How often should I deworm?
Puppies and kittens need it every few weeks while they are growing, which is far more often than most people are told. Adults with outdoor access are usually every three months, indoor-only adults less. The vet sets yours on the day, because a dog that eats things off Lagos streets and a cat that never leaves a flat are not on the same schedule.
Can I not just buy a tablet myself?
You can, and plenty do. Two things go wrong: the dose is guessed from appearance rather than weight, and the product is chosen for price rather than for the worm you actually have. If you would rather do it yourself, ask the vet at any visit which product and what dose, and we will write it down for you.
Do you deworm birds?
Yes. Birds are on completely different products and schedules from dogs and cats, which is exactly why they are worth having a vet do rather than adapting something off a shelf.
