The dose that keeps the first one working.

A vaccine is not a one-off. Protection fades, and the booster is what holds it up. It is also the appointment people miss most, because nothing goes wrong on the day it is missed.

What happens

What the appointment actually involves.

A check before the shot

Weight, temperature and an examination. A booster given to an animal that is already unwell is a wasted dose.

The same cold chain as the first dose

Carried in a monitored cool box. A vaccine that has been warm does nothing, and looks identical to one that has not.

The card updated on the spot

Product, batch, date and the vet's licence details, so the card is still evidence rather than a note.

The next date recorded and reminded

Kept on your file, because the whole reason boosters get missed is that nobody is holding the calendar.

Before we come

  • Find the existing card if you have one. If it is lost, say so and we will start a fresh record rather than guess at a history.
  • Tell us about any reaction to a previous shot, however mild, before the vet draws it up.
  • Feed normally. There is no reason to fast an animal for a vaccination.

Afterwards

  • A quiet evening and a slightly sore spot are normal. Swelling that grows, vomiting or an animal that will not stand is not, and needs a call.
  • If the gap since the last dose has been long, the vet may restart a short course rather than give one booster. That is a judgement made on the day and explained to you.

Pet health cover does not apply here

No pet health plan in Nigeria settles this, so it is paid for directly. We would rather say that here than have you discover it at the point of claiming.

Asked most

The three questions we get every time.

How much is a booster?

It is charged at the price of whichever vaccine is being boosted, so an anti-rabies booster costs the same as the anti-rabies vaccine, and a core dog or cat booster the same as the core vaccine. Every one of those prices is published on the pricing page.

What if we are late?

Come anyway. Being a few weeks late usually means one booster and you are back on schedule. Being a year or more late sometimes means restarting a short course, which the vet decides at the visit rather than over the phone.

Is it covered by pet health cover?

Skeepy Pet HMO covers the core vaccinations on its dog and cat plans, and a booster is one of those doses. Give us your HMO ID at booking and we check what is left on the plan before the vet comes out.
