A vet who will actually handle your bird.
Overgrowth happens quietly. A beak grows past its bite and a bird starts dropping food, or nails curl and it stops gripping a perch properly, and by the time it is obvious the bird has been uncomfortable for weeks.

What the appointment actually involves.
Proper restraint
Towel restraint, done by somebody who has done it before. Bad restraint is how birds are injured, and it is why most clinics decline them.
Beak shaped, not cut back
Taken to a natural shape and smoothed. A beak has a blood supply and cutting into it is both painful and dangerous.
Nails trimmed with clotting agent to hand
Bird nails bleed readily and it is not an emergency if you are ready for it, which we are.
The cause looked at
Perches, diet and lighting. Smooth dowel perches of one diameter are the commonest reason nails and beaks overgrow, and replacing them costs almost nothing.
Before we come
- Do not chase the bird around the cage before we arrive. An already stressed bird is a harder and riskier appointment.
- Leave the cage as it is so the vet can see the perches, the grit, the water and what is actually being eaten.
- Tell us what the bird eats, honestly. A seed-only diet is behind a great many beak problems and nobody is being judged for it.
Afterwards
- The bird will be indignant for an hour. That is normal and it passes.
- If overgrowth keeps coming back quickly, it is rarely just the trimming. Liver disease and diet show up in the beak, and we would look further.
Pet health cover does not apply here
No pet health plan in Nigeria settles this, so it is paid for directly. We would rather say that here than have you discover it at the point of claiming.
The three questions we get every time.
Why will other clinics not see my bird?
Because handling birds is a distinct skill and the consequences of getting it wrong are immediate. A great many Nigerian clinics are honest about being dog and cat practices. We do see birds, which is why people travel to us for it.
Can I trim the nails myself?
You can trim the very tips if you have a clotting powder in your hand and someone to hold the bird properly. The beak, no. There is blood supply and nerve in it, and a bird that cannot eat is a bird in serious trouble within a day.
Is bird care covered by pet health cover?
No. Pet health plans in Nigeria are written for dogs and cats, so bird care is paid for directly. We would rather say that here than have you find out when you try to claim.
