The dog medicine cabinet, and what does not belong in it.

Two things account for most of what a Lagos dog actually needs from a pharmacy: parasites outside and parasites inside. Everything else should follow a diagnosis rather than lead one.

What we would check first.

Tick prevention is disease prevention

Ehrlichia and babesia are carried by ticks here and they kill dogs. Monthly prevention is far cheaper than treating either.

A spot-on goes on skin, parted

Squeezed onto the coat it does almost nothing, which is why so many owners believe their product failed.

Check what else is in the house

A dog treated with permethrin that sleeps against a cat can kill that cat. If you have both, tell us.

Asked most

The questions people ask in this aisle.

My dog is limping. Can I give it something?

Not from a human cupboard. Ibuprofen and diclofenac cause kidney failure and bleeding ulcers in dogs, and paracetamol has a very narrow margin. There are safe dog anti-inflammatories and they need a weight and a quick look first.

How often should I treat for ticks?

Monthly through the year in Lagos rather than seasonally. And treat the compound as well, because the ticks live in the environment and the dog is only where you notice them.

Not sure what your pet actually needs? A vet at the visit will tell you, and will say when the answer is nothing. Book a home visit
