Birds · Lagos

A seed-only diet is why most pet birds get ill.

Almost every sick bird we are called to has been living on a seed mix, because seed is what is sold and birds like it. Seed is high in fat and short in vitamin A and calcium, and the illness that follows takes years to arrive and is hard to reverse once it does.

What we would check first.

Pellets should be the base

A formulated pellet is balanced in a way no seed mix is. Getting a seed-addicted bird onto pellets is slow and stubborn work, and worth starting today rather than next year.

Seed as a treat, not a meal

Especially sunflower seed, which birds pick out first and which is close to pure fat.

Fresh food matters

Dark leafy greens and orange vegetables cover the vitamin A that seed does not. Avocado is toxic to birds and so is chocolate.

Asked most

The questions people ask in this aisle.

My bird refuses pellets. What do I do?

Expected, and it takes weeks rather than days. Mix a small proportion of pellet into the seed and increase it very gradually, and never starve a bird into a switch: a bird that stops eating declines far faster than a dog or a cat. If you want it supervised, we will do it with you.

Is bird care covered by pet health cover?

No. Pet health plans in Nigeria are written for dogs and cats, so bird food and bird care are paid for directly.
