Why your cat stopped using the litter box (and how to fix it)
Litter box protest is communication, not wickedness. The six causes in order of likelihood, including the medical one to rule out first.
A cat that was clean for years and suddenly is not, is telling you something. Cats do not act out of spite; litter box avoidance always has a reason, and finding it beats every punishment ever invented.
Rule out the medical cause first
Urinary tract infections, bladder crystals and kidney issues make urination painful, and cats blame the box where the pain happens. A cat that strains, cries while passing urine, goes in tiny frequent amounts, or shows blood needs a vet promptly, and a male cat that cannot pass urine at all is a same-day emergency, full stop. Once medicine is ruled out, work through the rest.
The usual suspects, in order
- A dirty box. Cats are cleaner than we are; scoop daily, full change weekly. If you can smell it, the cat could smell it days ago.
- A changed litter. New brand, new scent, new texture; cats vote with their feet. Change litters gradually, half and half.
- Location stress. Boxes near generators, washing machines, busy corridors or food get boycotted. Quiet, accessible, private.
- Too few boxes. The rule is one per cat plus one, especially in multi-cat homes where one cat can guard the box against another.
- A covered box you love and the cat hates. Many cats refuse hoods; they trap smell and block escape routes.
- Household upheaval. New pets, new babies, moved furniture, guests; stress shows up in the box first.
Repairing the habit
Clean every accident with an enzyme cleaner, never bleach (its ammonia note smells like urine to a cat and invites repeats). Fix the cause, and confine the cat kindly to one room with a clean box for a few days to rebuild the pattern, as if litter training a new kitten again.
