Vaccinated but still sick? The booster gaps that catch owners out

"But he was vaccinated" usually means one shot, once. Why immunity fades, why puppy series matter, and the card-reading habit.

It is one of the saddest sentences we hear: "but he was vaccinated." Investigate, and the story is almost always the same: one shot as a puppy, sometimes two, and nothing since. The dog was started, never protected.

Why one shot is not protection

Puppies drink protective antibodies in their mother's first milk. Helpful, except those same maternal antibodies neutralise vaccines before the puppy's own immune system learns anything. Nobody can say precisely when maternal protection fades in an individual puppy, which is exactly why the series repeats at 6 to 8, 10 to 12 and 14 to 16 weeks: to guarantee at least one dose lands after the interference clears. Stop after the first shot and there is a real chance the puppy is effectively unvaccinated.

Why boosters exist

Immunity is not a tattoo; it fades. The yearly booster reminds the immune system what parvo, distemper and rabies look like, keeping antibody levels in the protective zone. Skip two or three years and protection quietly sinks, while the card in the drawer still says "vaccinated".

The card-reading habit

Take out your pet's vaccination card today and read three things: which vaccines were actually given (rabies and DHLPP for dogs, rabies and FVRCP for cats), whether the puppy or kitten series was completed, and the date of the most recent booster. If that date is more than a year old, your pet is overdue, however healthy it looks.

Timing games not worth playing

Vaccinating a sick or heavily worm-burdened animal weakens the response, which is why deworming and vaccination are scheduled together thoughtfully, and why "he had a small cough that day" matters when a vet asks.

If the card reading went badly, no judgment; it goes badly in most drawers. Book a home visit and we will bring the schedule current, cold chain to your doorstep, card updated before we leave.

Just read the card and found gaps?

No judgment; most cards have them. One visit brings everything current.
