Litter training a kitten in a Lagos flat: a one-week plan
Cats mostly train themselves if you set things up right. The tray, the litter, the placement, and the mistakes that cause accidents.
Good news first: cats are the easiest animals to house-train on earth. The instinct to dig and bury is built in. Your job is not to teach the kitten; it is to set up the environment so the instinct lands in the right place.
The setup
One tray per cat, plus one spare, is the golden rule. Choose a tray with low sides for a small kitten. Fill it with three to five centimetres of litter; clumping litter makes your life easier. Place it somewhere quiet and accessible, away from food and water, because cats refuse to toilet where they eat, and away from the washing machine or generator noise.
The one-week plan
- Day 1: confine the kitten to one room with the tray, food and bed. Place it in the tray after every meal and every nap.
- Days 2 to 3: watch for the signs, sniffing corners, scratching the floor, and calmly move the kitten to the tray each time.
- Days 4 to 7: expand access to the flat one room at a time. Keep the tray in the same place.
Most kittens are reliable within the week. Never punish accidents; clean them with an enzyme cleaner so the smell does not invite a repeat, and quietly review your setup instead.
If accidents keep happening
Persistent misses usually mean one of five things: the tray is dirty (scoop daily, full change weekly), the litter type changed, the tray is in a busy or noisy spot, another pet is ambushing the kitten there, or something medical like a urinary infection is brewing. A kitten that strains, cries in the tray, or passes blood needs a vet promptly, not more training.
