A scratching post, meant for cats. For saving the furniture, essentially. It has to be tall enough for a full stretch and heavy enough not to wobble. Cats reject anything that moves when they lean on it, and then go back to the sofa. Scratching is territorial marking and stretching, not claw maintenance, so a cat with outdoor access still needs one indoors.
