Supplements help at the margins, not the middle.

A supplement can make a good diet slightly better or support a specific problem. It cannot rescue a bad diet, and it will not fix a condition that needs treating. That is a duller claim than the labels make, and it is the true one.

What we would check first.

A complete diet does not need a multivitamin

If you feed a complete food, adding general vitamins usually does nothing and occasionally does harm. Fat-soluble vitamins accumulate.

Give joint support time

Glucosamine and omega-3s work slowly and modestly. Judge them at eight to twelve weeks, not at one, and expect a small improvement rather than a new dog.

Probiotics have a moment

Genuinely useful after antibiotics, a diet change or a bout of diarrhoea. Less so as something given forever to a well animal.

Dental chews are not brushing

They help a little. Nothing replaces a toothbrush, and neither touches disease that is already under the gumline.

Asked most

The questions people ask in this aisle.

My dog is stiff getting up. Is a joint supplement enough?

It is worth adding and it is rarely enough on its own. The two things that change an arthritic dog most are weight and controlled exercise, and a dog carrying extra weight will not be rescued by a capsule. Come at it from all three.

Are coconut oil and turmeric worth it?

Popular, cheap and mostly harmless, with thinner evidence than the internet suggests. Coconut oil is largely saturated fat and adds calories you may not want. If it is helping and the dog is well, no harm. Do not use either in place of treatment for something diagnosable.

Can I give my pet human supplements?

Ask first. Doses are wrong, and several human formulations contain xylitol, which causes fatal hypoglycaemia in dogs. Zinc and iron supplements are also readily toxic at pet body weights.
