Shampoo is a medicine you are choosing off a shelf.
Pet skin is thinner and less acidic than ours, which is why human shampoo strips it and why a medicated wash used wrongly does nothing. Most of what fails in home grooming is not the product, it is contact time and the brush.

What we would check first.
Never human shampoo
The pH is wrong for pet skin, and repeated use gives you the dry, flaking, itchy dog people then treat for allergies.
Medicated shampoo needs ten minutes on the skin
Lathered and rinsed straight off, it does nothing. The contact time is the treatment, and this is the single commonest reason people report that a medicated wash "did not work".
Buy the brush for the coat
A slicker for matting, an undercoat rake for a double coat, a rubber curry for a short coat. The wrong brush either does nothing or scratches skin.
Nail clippers you can actually see through
Scissor-type clippers for most dogs, and a styptic powder in the same drawer. Cutting a quick without something to stop it is how a dog learns to hate having its feet touched.
The questions people ask in this aisle.
How often should I bathe my dog?
Every four to eight weeks for most dogs, and less than you would think. Over-bathing strips the coat oils and causes the itch it was meant to fix. A dog that genuinely smells between baths usually has an ear, skin or dental problem producing the smell, and washing it is treating the symptom.
Should I bathe my cat?
Usually not. Healthy cats groom themselves and a bath is a large amount of stress for very little gain. The exceptions are real: something toxic on the coat, a medicated wash the vet asked for, or an elderly or overweight cat that can no longer reach its own back.
Can I clip my dog's coat myself?
Short single coats, yes, with care. Double coats, be careful: clipping one can permanently change how it regrows, and it does not cool the dog. If you are unsure which yours is, ask before you switch the clippers on.
