A dog that is "just weak", eating less, losing weight, flat for weeks, is one of the most common presentations we see. And one of the most common causes has a name most owners have never heard: ehrlichiosis, tick fever.
What tick fever is
Ehrlichia is a blood parasite delivered by the brown dog tick, the tick most at home in Nigerian compounds and kennels. One infected tick bite is enough. The organism attacks blood cells and platelets, and it is very good at hiding.
Why it gets missed
The signs are vague: fever that comes and goes, poor appetite, weight loss, dullness, pale gums, occasionally nosebleeds or small skin bruises. Owners treat for "malaria" with human drugs, or deworm again, or change food, while the real disease advances. Untreated, it can slide into a chronic phase that suppresses the bone marrow itself, and that stage can be fatal.
The tell-tale combination
A dog with any tick history plus persistent dullness, pale gums, weight loss or unexplained bleeding deserves a blood test, not guesswork. Testing is the difference between a treatable infection and a tragedy; caught reasonably early, tick fever responds well to a specific antibiotic course a vet prescribes and monitors.
Prevention is genuinely easy
This entire disease is delivered by ticks, so tick control is the vaccine that exists. Monthly flea and tick prevention on the dog, weekly hand-checks (ears, toes, armpits, tail base), and treating the environment, because ticks live in cracks, walls and soil, not just on dogs.
