Rainy season in Lagos is tick season. Here is your pet's defence plan
Humidity turns compounds into tick nurseries. A three-part plan that actually breaks the cycle: pet, home, schedule.
Every year when the rains settle in, our case load shifts. Skin infections climb, and behind most of them are the same two culprits: fleas and ticks, thriving in the warm, humid conditions a Lagos rainy season provides.
Why the rainy season is different
Fleas and ticks are always around, but humidity accelerates their life cycle dramatically. Eggs that would sit dormant in dry heat hatch in days. A compound that had a manageable population in February can be a full infestation by July.
Part one: treat the pet
A quality spot-on or chewable treatment, dosed by weight, applied on schedule. One application is not a season's protection; most products need repeating monthly. The most common failure we see is a treatment bought in May and never repeated.
Part two: treat the environment
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is why infestations come back. For every flea on your pet, there are many more eggs and larvae in bedding, cracks, carpets and shaded soil. Treating the pet without the environment is half a job. Wash bedding in hot water weekly during the season, and consider a professional pet-safe fumigation of the home and kennel area once the rains begin. Part three: keep the schedule
Mark the reapplication dates or let us track them for you. Flea and tick control fails on memory, not on product quality.
What a tick problem looks like
Check ears, between toes, armpits and around the tail base weekly. Small dark bumps that were not there before, black gritty specks in the coat (flea dirt), scratching, or hair loss around the tail base all deserve attention. Ticks in Nigeria also transmit blood parasites that cause fever, weakness and pale gums; if you see those signs, do not wait.
A dog that spends time in a compound is not automatically a dog that must have ticks. With the three-part plan, even outdoor dogs stay clean through the wettest months.
