Parvo in dogs: the signs every Nigerian owner must catch early
Parvovirus kills fast and spreads through soil and shoes. The early signs, what treatment involves, and why vaccination is the only real protection.
Ask any vet in Lagos which disease breaks their heart most often and the answer is usually parvo. It hits puppies hardest, it moves fast, and by the time many owners seek help the odds have already turned.
What parvo looks like
The early signs are easy to dismiss: a puppy that suddenly loses interest in food, seems flat and tired, maybe vomits once. Within a day or two it progresses to repeated vomiting and diarrhoea that is often bloody with a distinct, foul smell. Dehydration follows quickly, and dehydration is what kills.
Why it spreads so easily here
Parvovirus survives in soil and on surfaces for months. It travels on shoes, tyres, and the paws of other dogs. A puppy does not need to meet a sick dog to catch it; walking on ground a sick dog crossed weeks ago can be enough. This is why keeping an unvaccinated puppy "safely at home" in a compound is not the protection people assume.
What to do if you suspect it
Move immediately. Parvo is a medical emergency and home remedies do not work. Treatment is supportive: fluids, anti-nausea medication and close monitoring, ideally started before severe dehydration sets in. Puppies treated early have a real chance. Puppies treated late often do not.
The only real protection
The DHLPP vaccine covers parvovirus, and the full puppy series matters: one shot is not protection, because antibodies from the mother can cancel out early doses. Complete the schedule at 6 to 8, 10 to 12, and 14 to 16 weeks, then boost yearly.
