Mange: why your dog is going bald and scratching raw
The two kinds of mange look similar but behave differently. What actually cures it, and why palm oil and engine oil make it worse.
Patchy hair loss, relentless scratching, crusty thickened skin: mange is one of the most visible dog diseases in Nigeria, and one of the most mistreated. Let us fix that.
Two mites, two diseases
Sarcoptic mange (scabies) burrows into the skin, itches ferociously, spreads between dogs on contact, and can give humans an itchy rash too. Demodectic mange lives in hair follicles; most dogs carry a small population harmlessly, but in puppies and dogs with weakened immunity it multiplies into patchy hair loss, classically starting around the eyes and face, usually less itchy early on.
Why does the difference matter? Because treatment, contagion risk and the questions behind the disease differ. Demodectic mange in an adult dog is often a flag that something else is suppressing immunity, and that something needs finding.
What actually works
Modern treatment is straightforward and effective: specific anti-parasitic medications, prescribed and dosed by a vet, sometimes with medicated washes and antibiotics for the secondary skin infections that scratching opens up. Treated properly, most dogs regrow a full coat within weeks to a couple of months.
What does not work
Engine oil, palm oil, kerosene, battery water: these traditional remedies burn already-damaged skin, poison dogs that lick themselves, and delay real treatment while the disease spreads. They cost more lives than they save. Sulphur soap alone also disappoints; it may soothe but rarely clears an established infestation.
Stop the spread
For sarcoptic cases, treat all in-contact dogs, wash bedding in hot water, and treat the environment; kennels and sleeping corners reload dogs with mites otherwise. Our fumigation service covers exactly this alongside the medical treatment.
