Travelling for the long weekend? Your pet's options, ranked

Independence Day trips need a pet plan. Boarding, pet sitters, taking them along, or a neighbour: what works and what usually goes wrong.

With the Independence Day holiday landing this week, half of Lagos is planning a trip, and every trip with a pet at home needs one honest question answered early: who is responsible for this animal while you are away?

Option one: a pet sitter at your home

Usually the least stressful choice for the pet; it keeps its territory, routine and smells. A sitter visits once or twice daily for feeding, water, cleaning and company, or stays over. The catch is trust and competence: use someone referenced, agree the routine in writing, and leave your vet's contact prominently. Cats especially do far better at home than boarded.

Option two: boarding

Good boarding works well for sociable dogs; bad boarding is where kennel cough and tick infestations come home from. Inspect before you commit: clean runs, current-vaccination requirements (if they do not ask for your card, walk away), separation of sizes, and someone who actually walks the dogs. Book early; holidays fill fast.

Option three: take them along

Doable with preparation: a secure crate for the road, water and rest stops every few hours, and confirmation that your destination genuinely welcomes the pet. Never leave an animal in a parked car "for ten minutes"; heat in a closed car is lethal here in well under that.

Option four: the neighbour's boy

The most common plan and the most common failure. Casual arrangements collapse when the helper travels too, forgets, or fears the dog. If you must use informal help, make it specific: written feeding times, measured portions, your number and your vet's number.

Whichever option you pick, top up food and supplies from the Pet Shop before the rush, and if your pet is due any vaccine before boarding, book the home visit this week, not the morning of the trip.
