How to choose dog food in Nigeria without wasting money
Imported, local, or home-cooked? How to read a feed label, judge value per kilo, and switch foods without wrecking your dog's stomach.

Walk into any pet store and the dog food shelf is a wall of promises. Price is not always quality, and the cheapest bag is often the most expensive decision. Here is how we advise our own clients.
Read the first three ingredients
Ingredients are listed by weight. You want to see a named protein, chicken, lamb, fish, in the first two or three positions. If the list opens with vague fillers and by-products, the protein numbers on the front of the bag are doing heavy lifting from poor sources.
Match the food to the dog
A puppy needs growth-stage food; adult food genuinely shortchanges a growing body on calcium and calories. Large breeds benefit from large-breed formulas that manage growth speed and joint load. Seniors need fewer calories and more joint support. "One bag for everybody" is convenient and quietly costly.
Judge value per kilo fed, not per bag
Dense, quality food feeds less per meal. A more expensive bag that feeds 300g a day can cost less per month than a cheap bag that needs 500g to deliver the same energy, and the difference shows in coat, stool quality and vet bills. Do the arithmetic once and it changes how you shop.
Switching foods the right way
Sudden switches cause diarrhoea. Transition over 7 days: 25 percent new food for two days, then 50, then 75, then fully switched. If the stool stays soft beyond the transition, that food may simply not suit your dog.
Where home cooking fits
Home-cooked food can work, but balanced is the hard part; meat and rice alone leaves gaps that show up over months. If you cook, do it with guidance, and keep it plain: no seasoning cubes, no onions.
Our Pet Shop stocks the brands our vets actually feed their own dogs, including Reflex Plus and Josera lines, delivered to your door. Not sure which one for your dog? Ask the vet at your next home visit; honest advice is part of the service.
