The best dogs for Lagos apartment living (and the worst)

Space is not the only factor. Energy, noise, heat tolerance and grooming needs decide which dogs thrive in a flat, honestly ranked.

A dog does not need a compound to be happy. It needs its needs met, and different breeds have very different needs. The mismatch we see most is not size; it is energy. A small, loud, under-exercised terrier suffers more in a flat than a calm large dog with a daily walk.

What actually matters in a flat

Four things: energy level, noise, heat tolerance and grooming load. Lagos adds its own filters; thick double coats fight our climate, and thin walls make barkers unpopular with neighbours quickly.

Breeds that tend to thrive in apartments

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: calm, affectionate, quiet
  • French Bulldog: low exercise needs, but watch heat carefully
  • Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu: small, adaptable, moderate energy, popular here for good reason
  • Pug: easygoing, though heat and weight need managing
  • Greyhound and whippet types: surprisingly lazy indoors, one good walk and they sleep
  • Many adult local mixes: often calm, heat-adapted and grateful

Breeds that struggle in flats

High-drive working breeds top the list: Belgian Malinois, working-line German Shepherds, huskies (whose coats also fight our heat), and young Boerboels or Rottweilers without serious space and exercise. These are excellent dogs in the right setting; a two-bedroom flat with everyone out at work is not that setting. Boredom in a powerful dog does not look like sadness; it looks like destroyed furniture and neighbour complaints.

The honest test

Before choosing a breed, answer one question truthfully: how many minutes of walking and play will this dog get on your busiest day, not your best day? Choose the dog that fits that number.

This exact conversation is what our Own a Pet service is for: tell us your home and routine, and we will tell you honestly what fits, then source a healthy, vet-checked one for you.
